Georgia Anne Muldrow's life story begins in Los Angeles, California, where she was born to a musical home. That the word that was passed from one black person to another, expanding its reach from the streets of Harlem to the West Coast and eventually into the airwaves for mass consumption, making Muldrow an integral part of woke's story. As important as the word is to our current political state, it is also important to understand the word's ties to blackness. I started this journey researching the work of Harlem author William Melvin Kelley, who's credited with coining woke in his 1962 New York Times essay "If You're Woke You Dig It," and traced its use to Badu's "Master Teacher" almost five decades later. But I also hoped to highlight the erasure of the people who invented it in its political and racial context - black people. I embarked on this journey to discover the origins of the word woke because of the uniqueness in its present ubiquity, considering its past is shrouded in mystery. But I wanted to talk about the word woke and her role in introducing it to the mainstream. I could have called Muldrow to talk about a number of topics such as her storied career or multiple collaborative albums with partner Dudley Perkins. "They're too busy being depressed to call themselves woke." Most people who are woke are agonizing inside," Muldrow says. "Most people who are woke ain't calling themselves woke. But she also doesn't mince her words on wokeness becoming a performative trend for the masses in recent years. Sure, she's happy to see the word woke become a rallying cry of resilience for black people in America. This is only one of many profound insights Muldrow offers on the idea of wokeness during our two-and-a-half-hour talk, and what it's become since she first uttered the word on Erykah Badu's "Master Teacher" a decade ago. There was no year where the fight wasn't going down." Just being in touch with the struggle that our people have gone through here and understanding we've been fighting since the very day we touched down here. That's woke - understanding what your ancestors went through. You got kidnapped here and then you got punked out of your own language, everything. They're not acting in a neighborly fashion, they're the ones who conked you on your head. Then: "Woke is definitely a black experience - woke is if someone put a burlap sack on your head, knocked you out, and put you in a new location and then you come to and understand where you are ain't home and the people around you ain't your neighbors. I posit this thought to Georgia Anne Muldrow, one of the most forward-thinking musicians of our time, as we speak on the phone in early October. In the second installment of the " Origin of Woke" series, Elijah Watson highlights Georgia Anne Muldrow, the musician who introduced Erykah Badu to the word woke.

It's fully physically modeling, right? I've heard mostly good things about it also, but as one of my weak sides are that I can't settle with the "standard", or "stage" in this case, and I think the pro version is a bit expensive for my taste Which version did you go for?īut a really good reason for choosing Pianoteq is of course it's still being developed I've heard about Pianoteq 5, but never tested it. At the end I bought Pianoteq 5 because it sounds better in comparison to TruePianos and it is still developed. After Reason 9.5 supported VST's the first thing I did was testing some Pianos especially TruePianos and Pianoteq 5. The piano consists of five modules, The downside is that it hasn't been developed in 5 years or so, but it's still one of the best sounding pianos I know of. It's a really great sounding hybrid piano, which combines physical modeling synthesis and samples. It's usually 120 USD, but sometimes on sale for 95 USD. I'm not trying to insult anyone here, simply pointing out there's higher quality, without question, products available in the world for discerning people. I've personally used the Grand Piano options in Kontact for years and they're drastically better than anything on offer for Reason either stock or RE. The Waves Grand Piano, especially if it's still $29 is light years better than Radical Piano or Reason Pianos. I use Keyscape's Yamaha C7 grand, and the difference is so striking that Reason Pianos now sounds and feels to me like a 90's ROMpler piano patch.Įxactly. I have Reason Pianos, and it just doesn't feel satisfactory when playing soft material. There are plenty of other VSTs in that price range, like Addictive Keys Studio Grand ($89, or free with certain Focusrite/Novation products), Acousticsamples C7 is about $130 or so, etc. Waves' Grand Rhapsody is $29 right now Pianoteq Stage is $129 (just a little more than you'd pay for Radical Pianos) and is one of the standard VST pianos. Reason Pianos and Radical Piano are pretty good sounding, but I think for the money you can get something "better" with VSTs. One cool little feature with this window is the solo button on the top of every node in your hypershade, this allows you to use the material viewer as a media display so you can see what you are doing to the textures directly without the distractions that may be on your material itself (like bump or specular).Īnother little time saver is when you're in the hypershade node graph you can press the TAB key which will open a small text box allowing you to type the node you want to use. The most important new feature (in my opinion) is the material viewer, by default maya 2016 comes with its own little lookdev environment with different geometries and HDR environment lights to try out which is great for testing you material on its own without fancy geometry to distract you, typically I like to use the shader ball with the Interior2 colour light set-up for most of my shader development. Still though, its cool stuff!Īt first the hypershade is a confusing place but with maya 2016 it got a lot more friendly to use with the visible node connection points on display. How this work in an animation pipeline? well to be honest I have no idea, since I don't have vray 3.3 I haven't been able to test it to see what happens but I assume that it has the same problem as the 'place3dtexture' node when objects are moved. This is called 'tri-planar' projection and it allows 2D images to be projected in 3d space without the use of a specific camera, also due to the way its algorithm works it also eliminates texture seams and uv artefacts like stretching and compression. Camera projects are very powerful and often used for matte painting and are not entirely uv dependant despite using a 2d image.įinally, there is a third type of texture projection that you can use which was added in vray 3.3 which combines both of the above techniques. if you want to paint a texture or project an image using this you have to instead use a camera projection. Sadly, using this projection type means you cant input 2d images. Also, when working with volumetric effects it is easy to use the 'place3dtexture' node to create much more interesting looks when rendered, it even allows you to fake attributes like uneven density within your effects if used correctly. However this comes with a catch, since the 'Place3dtexture' node rely's on world space moving the object will change the resulting texture on the object, as you can imagine this looks weird in animation (That's not to say its useless though, you just have to think outside the box!). First of all it does not rely on uv's at all, which is fantastic if you don't want texture seams, tiling artefacts and texture stretching/compression. The second method of texture projection is the 'place3Dtexture' node which overcomes the problems mentioned with the 2d texture placement. However, its not all bad to use 2d texture projects since the objects position in space is not important, this means you can animate the mesh and your textures remain constant which is great for obvious reasons. The main thing to keep in mind about 2d textures is that they are dependant on your objects UV's for placement meaning if your uvs are bad, the texture will be bad, it also means that seams in your uv are visible (So keep them uv's clean!). The first of which is the 'place2Dtexture' node which comes pre attached when you create any 2D effect such as 'fractal', 'noise', 'cloth' and so on. Within Maya there are two methods to place textures on your material that come built into the program. After venturing further away from hip hop with an acting career and two poorly received albums, Mos Def signed a recording contract with Downtown and recorded The Ecstatic primarily at the Record Plant in Los Angeles. He worked with producers such as Preservation, Mr. Flash, Oh No, and Madlib, with the latter two reusing instrumentals they had produced on Stones Throw Records. The work of Stones Throw rapper MF Doom was also cited by Mos Def as an influence, while singer Georgia Anne Muldrow, formerly of the record label, performed as one of the album's few guest vocalists, along with rappers Slick Rick and Talib Kweli.ĭescribed by music journalists as a conscious and alternative hip hop record, The Ecstatic features an eccentric, internationalist quality. Mos Def's raps about global politics, love, war, spirituality, and social conditions are informed by the zeitgeist of the late 2000s, Black internationalism, and Pan-Islamic ideas, incorporating a number of Islamic references throughout the album. Its loosely structured, lightly reverbed songs use unconventional time signatures and samples taken from a variety of international musical styles, including Afrobeat, soul, Eurodance, jazz, reggae, Latin, and Middle Eastern music. Mos Def titled the album after one of his favorite novels, Victor LaValle's The Ecstatic (2002), believing its titular phrase evoked his singular musical vision. For the album's front cover, a still from Charles Burnett's 1978 film Killer of Sheep was reproduced in red tint. The Ecstatic charted at number nine on the Billboard 200 in its first week of release and eventually sold 168,000 copies. Its sales benefited from its presence on Internet blogs and the release of a T-shirt illustrating the record's packaging alongside a label printed with a code redeemable for a free download of the album.
